Dewey BunnellCrafting America's Timeless Sound
Dewey Bunnell, born January 19, 1952, in Harrogate, England, to an American military father and English mother, is the soulful force behind America, the folk-rock trio he co-founded in 1969 with Gerry Beckley and Dan Peek. Raised between U.S. Air Force bases and inspired by the Beatles and Beach Boys, Bunnell’s transatlantic roots shaped his evocative songwriting.
His iconic "A Horse with No Name" (1971) topped charts, blending desert imagery with haunting acoustic melodies, while hits like "Ventura Highway" and "Tin Man" captured the era’s wanderlust and introspection.
With George Martin’s production, America earned a 1973 Grammy for Best New Artist and sold over 30 million records. Bunnell’s vivid lyrics and harmonies, reflecting nature and human resilience, defined the band’s enduring soft-rock legacy.
After Peek’s 1977 exit and Beckley’s 2023 touring hiatus, Bunnell, now 74, continues leading America on stage, cementing his mark on American music with songs that resonate across generations.
